About the location:

There are few things that unite photographers in Washington, DC like the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The cherry blossom trees were planted in 1912 as a gift from the people of Japan to the United States. A century later, the city will be in bloom as we celebrate the enduring symbols of friendship and goodwill.

For shutterbugs, the colors and textures of the Tidal Basin provide a treasure chest of photo opportunities. The evolution begins when vivid pink buds appear on twisted, weathered trunks. Soon the flowers burst into soft pink crowns. Before you know it, white petals are swirling in the breeze and covering the basin like a blanket of snow.

We will begin our journey at the Tidal Basin Boat House and wind around the basin, past the new Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, ending at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.

What you will learn:

  • How do you get perfect exposure?
  • What composition techniques can you use for more impactful pictures?
  • What are the best ways to capture and showcase the cherry blossoms?
  • How do you capture the story and energy of the festival?

Our 3-hour extravaganza around the Tidal Basin starts with a refresher on exposure and composition. We then discover the secrets of landscape and travel photography as we work through our own scavenger hunt of great photo opportunities.
